Tallinn University of Technology

Tallinn University of Technology is the only technical university in Estonia. TalTech provides higher education at all levels in engineering and technology, information technology, economics, science, and maritime. TalTech provides expertise in areas such as autonomous technology and 5G networks.

The role of TalTech is to implement a self-driving shuttle pilot without a safety person on-board in Tallinn. A number of reports will be provided based on the report:

  1. Report on the technical capabilities and potential risk when driving without a safety driver
  2. Experiment report on the human perception towards the driverless bus together with an recommendations on the future LoD (language of driving)
  3. Experiment report on the communications network requirements for remote-control driving
  4. An evaluation of 5G network advantages based on remote control pilots over TalTech 5G.

The project will bring together three different units in the university: the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (School of Engineering), Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance (School of Business and Governance) and the Smart City Center of Excellence. Such cooperation between different units ensures an interdisciplinary approach. While the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering identifies the technical requirements and challenges related to fully autonomous driving, the Nurkse Department and Smart City CoE will give these technical requirements and challenges a societal context (challenges for cities and users).

Project Team

Senior researcher Raivo Sell is responsible for the implementation of the project in TalTech. He is also the head of autonomous vehicles research group of TalTech.

Jaanus Müür is PhD student at Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance. He will be responsible for the communication from TalTech side. In the university he will also act as the “bridge” between the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Nurkse Department and Smart City CoE.
